Service Families

Welcome to the Oreston Community Academy Service Families Page!

We are proud to be a school that supports children from service families. Service children are young people who have one or more family members working in the Armed Forces.

Mrs Greenway runs our Service Children Club, where we meet to chat, support each other, and enjoy fun activities together. It’s a place where everyone is listened to, everyone has a voice, and everyone belongs.

We meet every Monday lunchtime, and we would love you to join us. Come along, make new friends, and have some fun. You might even get the chance to take home our special Service Bear for an adventure!

What’s Happening This Term?

πŸ’œ Monday Lunch Club Every Monday, our Service children can join us in the Year 5 Dolphins classroom from 12.30–1.00. There are crafts, games and plenty of fun with friends who understand what it’s like to be part of a Service family.

πŸ’œ Field Gun Club Our older Service pupils have started training for the Junior Field Gun Tournament, held each year on Armed Forces Day at Plymouth Hoe. It’s a brilliant chance to build teamwork, confidence and new skills.

πŸ’œ Month of the Military Child – April 2026 We celebrated this special month by recognising the amazing strength and resilience of our Service children. They often move home, start new schools and spend time away from loved ones — and they handle it all with courage.

πŸ’œ Purple Up Day! We joined schools across the country by wearing purple to show our support. Purple represents all branches of the military, and it was wonderful to see so many children and staff taking part.

πŸ’œ Dandelion Art & Meet‑Up I loved meeting all our Service children together last week. We talked about the dandelion — the official symbol of the Month of the Military Child — because it can grow and thrive wherever it lands. The children then created their own beautiful dandelion artwork.

πŸ’œ Service Families Afternoon Tea This week, we welcomed our Service families for a friendly afternoon tea. It was a lovely chance to chat, share experiences and talk about the support we offer in school. Thank you to everyone who came along. If you couldn’t attend but would like to share your thoughts, please email the school office.

🌈 Our aim is to provide a warm, safe space where Service children can spend time with friends and familiar adults who understand their unique experiences. We want every child to feel supported, valued and proud of who they are.
