Oreston Community Academy - A Matilda Champion School

In December 2018, Oreston Community Academy were very lucky and excited to have been selected as one of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Matilda Champion Schools’ in association with the Theatre Royal, Plymouth. We are one of only 50 schools nationally who are taking part in the project so it really is a great opportunity. We kick started the project with a visit to watch the dress rehearsal of Matilda the Musical at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth, where the children were amazed and inspired by the touring casts performances – they couldn’t wait to get stuck in to our own rehearsals!

Our ‘Matilda Club’, containing 49 Key Stage 2 children, was formed in January 2019 and met twice a week after school throughout the Spring term 2019 to rehearse and choreograph all of the energetic ensemble numbers and acting scenes for our own version of Matilda The Musical. As part of the project, we also had 3 full-day visits from a Director, Choreographer and Musical Director from the Royal Shakespeare Company. During these ‘take-over days’, the children loved spending time singing, dancing and acting with the RSC professionals and showed some incredible talents; they even made one of our teachers get all emotional!

All of their hard work and commitment culminated in an incredible set of performances in April 2019, where the children completely amazed friends, family, staff and students from Oreston with their confident, polished and inspiring performances.

We are now in our second year of the project, Phase 2, where we will be connecting and sharing our skills with other schools to pass on what we have learnt. We will also be starting a new musical production in Spring 2020 which will build upon the incredible achievement made by our staff and students with Matilda The Musical in 2019. Watch this space for more creative arts fun coming soon!
